January/February News
March 20th, 2009Man, it’s going to be hard to remember two months of stuff. Well, here it goes.
I’m sure most of you know about our new weekend sessions by now. It took everyone a little time to get use to it, but a Saturday/Sunday session is so much more enjoyable now. You can actually get a run in!
The January All Nighter was ???? I honestly don’t remember. I’m sure it was fun. I do remember that Red Bull got the insanity started, and Shawn won the game of S.K.A.T.E again.
Rick Thorne’s Join the Army Skatepark Tour was sick! Andy Seehausen won the BMX contest, and Jeff Rasp won the skate contest. Andy and Jeff SHREDDED the park! Both are now on the Monster Energy flow team.
Rick interviewed me about the park for his radio show, ESPN Action Sports. It’s available as a podcast through iTunes. Click on the link, scroll down a little and it’s listed under “Archived Podcasts” as “ESPN Action Sports: 3/9.” Check it out and subscribe, it’s FREE!
Rick is originally from Kansas City and use to live in St. Louis. It had been 10+ years since I’d seen him last. It was good to hangout with him again, and meet his band. Good Guys in Black, are AWESOME! They’re a fun bunch.
The RR annual Ohio Roadtrip was 2/12-2/15. Marvin, Scott, Jake, Nick, Tom, Jeremy, Justin, Dan, and I loaded up into a rental van and hit the road. Marvin drove us up there and I swear his driving gets worse every year. He’s always looking everywhere but were he should be looking, THE ROAD! We drifted from one lane to the next all the way to Ohio, but made it in one piece.
The trip sucked 50% of the time and RULED 50% of the time! Let me explain. I was sick off and on the ENTIRE trip. Thursday evening we hit The Flow. Nothing out of the ordinary, just a good riding/hangout session. Oh yeah, and Justin broke my brand new Park chainbreaker! YOU PUTZ! We ate at Ruby Tuesdays that night and I bit into a tooth that was in the dessert I ordered. It didn’t bother me at first for some reason, but the more I thought about it….YUCK! We drove to Cleveland that night and spent the rest of our days there for RAY’S! Nick, Tom, Dan, and Jake stayed in a room together….THANK GOD! Their room smelled like a rotten fart the entire time, I’M NOT JOKING.
We rode Ray’s MTB Friday. I started to get sick Friday morning (not because of the tooth) and didn’t ride much at all. It was AWESOME to see everyone riding and having SO MUCH FUN at Ray’s. Nick was inspecting the rafters the entire time. From the time we got to Ray’s until we left each night, I honestly don’t remember ever seeing Scott or Dan stop riding Friday or Saturday. Those two were like kids in a candy shop. Jeremy does the BEST 360’s I’ve ever seen! Nose bombed in before he hits 180! I remember seeing him ride for the first time at RR years ago and was instantly impressed with his style. We rode Ray’s again Saturday. I was feeling better and rode the entire day. IT WAS AWESOME! I relearned most of the tricks I use to be able to do. Everyone was riding at their best. It was a cool thing to see. Justin learned busdrivers that he trys to call barspins. I don’t think I’ve every seen Jake do that many backflips in one day. Ray’s staff had to turn the lights off on Tom to get him to stop.
I got even sicker Sunday. We drove back home and managed to make it back in one piece without Marvin driving. I got almost everyone sick by the end of the trip. As soon as we pulled into my driveway, Jeremy jumped out of the van and started puking in the street.
A few trip inspired observations….Dan doesn’t have an off switch. He is nonstop buffoonery! He had me smirking the entire trip. I think Nick Mazucca is one the happiest guys on the planet. That dude is always a pickmeup. Andy Seehausen didn’t make it this trip, but Tom took over as the salty one in our bunch….RELAX already! Marvin….where should I even begin, he snores like an old man! Scott!…hit him again to shut him up! I had to kick Jeremy out of the bed for a cuddling penalty. I think Justin hallucinates in his sleep. He woke up one night talking to himself, tried to get up off the floor; didn’t make it, and then went to fall asleep in the bed next to him on Scott’s feet. Everywhere we went people kept asking us if we were a band. I think it was Jake’s mo-fo-chickenhawk, Nick’s bald head, and my sideburns.
I’ve known all of these guys for YEARS, and I don’t get to spend much time with them these days. Trips like this are a rare treat. THE END.
The Flatland Jam was sweet! I tried it once for a night in a parking garage years ago (that sounds bad doesn’t it) but gave up. Way TOO hard! It was cool to see some flat in person again. Thanks to Matt Thomas for keeping it going in St. Louis.
The February All Nighter was cool. Everyone was flowin’ the park. Shawn won the game of S.K.A.T.E. again! He’s starting to get groupies! Check out the “Events” picture to the right.
We’ve made A LOT of changes to the park over the past two months. Check out the pictures in the “New Layout Ramp Pictures.” We still need to finish off the rhythm, the skate section (outer “L” of the park), and the area behind the 6′ quarter-4′ quarter/slantwall, then we will finally be done!
